Annoying Bulky Rental Car Keys

Every wonder why you get two car keys with the rental car at most major operators? Is it so they can charge you double for when you lose them?

Not quite.

The reason is that when the rental company decides to sell the vehicle after its useful life in rentals, they need both sets of keys and the car could be anywhere in the country when they decide to sell. Rather than trying to find a matching key in a giant storage facility somewhere they keep the keys together at the expense of the rental customer’s pocket.
